Equality Objectives

Maypole Primary School is committed to complying with the Public Sector Equality Duty by fostering an inclusive environment that promotes equality and diversity. The school ensures that all pupils, staff, and stakeholders are treated fairly, regardless of characteristics such as age, disability, gender, race or religion. Through policies, curriculum planning, and staff training, the school actively works to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations among different groups. Maypole has met its equality objectives by implementing initiatives that support underrepresented groups, promoting an inclusive curriculum, and monitoring progress to ensure all students reach their full potential. Regular reviews and engagement with the school community help maintain a culture of respect and fairness, aligning with legal and ethical responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010.

We recognise that the public sector equality duty has three aims. These aims are to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
  • Foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

Trust Equality objectives

The Trust has set overarching equality objectives that each school adopts and forms the basis of the school’s own equality objectives.

Objective 1: To ensure policies and procedures are free from discrimination and promote equal opportunities for all students and staff regardless of their background or characteristics.

Objective 2: To create an inclusive environment where all students and staff feel valued, respected and supported.

Objective 3: To strengthen relationships between schools, parents, carers, stakeholders and local communities to better understand and address their needs, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

School Equality Objectives

Objective 1: To ensure all pupils achieve to the best of their ability with a particular focus on deprivation.

Why we have chosen this objective:

Our data shows there is a consistent disadvantage in our school community (14.5%).

Performance outcomes (2023-24) for pupil premium indicate 40% achieve the expected standards in Reading, Writing and maths at the end of Key stage 2. 20% passed the multiplication tables check. 75% of pupils passed the phonics screening check and 50% achieved a good level of achievement in EYFS. In each of the areas, the pupils are performing significantly below non-pupil premium.  Attendance; approximately just under a third of persistent absentees are those of pupil premium background.

To achieve this objective we plan to:

  • To provide staff training,
  • Review expenditure,
  • Build exceptional relationships with our most vulnerable families and signpost agencies and resources/toolkits accordingly.
  • Prioritise discussions in pupil progress meetings and ensuring parents attend all parent meetings.
  • Interventions for therapeutic services to be allocated timely.
  • To work closely with the borough’s attendance officer.

Objective 2: To increase the representation and participation of minority groups within the school community; including SEND, gender and ethnic groups.

Why we have chosen this objective:

Following an audit, pupils of these groups are underrepresented for participation in school events eg School sports teams, music events and pupil voice groups including RRA, Head pupils. These pupils run the risk of not thriving as much as other groups within the school. Resources are not always reflective of the diversity of the school and groups are under-represented.

To achieve this objective we plan to:

  • Improve the diversity and representation of resources eg books within classroom libraries, EYFS, school library
  • Review experiences in line with promoting diversity in hooks and curriculum resources making the curriculum representatives of the context of the curriculum
  • Audit and Include parental contributions and suggestions to promote targeted groups
  • Ensure the selection processes for pupil voice groups are inclusive and target all pupils

Objective 3: Ensure that everyone at MPS has the opportunity to enjoy the highest possible standard of physical well-being and engage in enrichment experiences.

Why we have chosen this objective:

Local data shows that there has been a 4.1% decrease in the level of activity in Dartford of 16+ year olds which is disproportionate to Kent and the rest of England. From 2019-2023, when pupils start in Reception, the level of overweight and obesity is 15% (UK 22%) For Year 6 pupils, this figure is 33% (UK 34%). More of our children become overweight or obese during their time at MPS.

To achieve this objective we plan to:

  • Use of local providers.
  • Review the playground and use zones to promote physical activity.
  • Consider the expenditure of Sport premium,
  • Provide additional training for the PE lead.
  • Introduce whole school/national initiatives such as daily mile, Walk to School week, scooting to school.
